Water conservation has become essential worldwide, even in places where it has always been abundant. This is because our water resources are finite and are decreasing every year.

According to the World Economic Forum, water scarcity is one of the top five global risks and already affects a quarter of the world’s population. Unfortunately, people often don’t pay attention to water conservation because they don’t feel directly impacted by the issue. However, that’s not really the case.


If we all did our part in conserving our precious water resources, we could make a huge difference for the environment. Let’s learn to use it wisely, as it is a fundamental and irreplaceable resource.

10 TIPS TO UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF EVERY SINGLE DROP


1. TURN OFF THE WATER IF YOU DON’T NEED IT

To avoid an unnecessary waste, while you’re lathering your hair, shave your beard or brushing your teeth, turn off the water. Fill up the sink while you’re shaving your beard with not too much water, In this way you could save from 8 to 10 litres of water per minute, an open tap doesn’t increase the efficiency of a perfect shave.


2. INSTALL A LOW-FLOW TAP

A normal tap consume 16 L per minutes. If you install taps and mixers with flow control devices the consume will be 6 L per minute with an increase of saving water.


3. TAKE A QUICK SHOWER INSTEAD OF LONG BATH

If you choose showers to baths you’ll consume the 75% less. Close the shower head while you’re soaping and cut your shower of one minute.


4. REUSE WATER WHENEVER YOU CAN

The water left over from washing vegetables can be useful for watering plants on your balcony. You can also reuse the water produced as a byproduct from the dryer, which otherwise just goes down the drain. In fact, it can be used in many different ways: cleaning stainless steel, washing floors and windows, putting it in a clay humidifier, washing your car, and using it in the toilet flush tank.


5. BE CAREFUL ON LEAKS

6. WASH VEGETABLES INSIDE A CONTAINER

To achieve maximum efficiency and savings, always remember to fully load the washing machine and dishwasher without using the pre-wash program. Appliances consume an average of 40 to 150 liters of water per wash. Use them efficiently, and you'll get really satisfying results.


8. COLLECT WATER WHILE IS GETTING HOT

It usually happens that you’re running the water while you’re waiting for the hot one so start today to collect that cold water and use it for washing floors, watering plants or doing other housekeeping.


9. STORE RAINWATER

You can collect rainwater in a bowl or in a tank in this way you’ll be able to use it for watering the garden. Your plants need more attentions than water.


10. WATER THE ROOTS

When watering plants, make sure to water the roots and not the leaves. Remember to do it early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun has set, as the water evaporates more slowly and is absorbed by the soil instead of being wasted. For greater savings, install a "drip" irrigation system so your plants get the right amount of water.
